Warthog Shenanigans

Those of you who frequently play Halo 2 with me know that I am not the most vehicle-savvy player. I'm simply bad with them. Whether it's the Warthog, the Banshee, or one of the tanks, I'll usually be dead ten seconds after getting into the thing. If given the choice between taking a Scorpion or proceeding on foot with a Battle Rifle, I almost always opt to remain in the infantry. Recently though, at the urging of a certain feline that will remain nameless, I have been driving and using the turret on the Warthog more often, and I have to say, it's some of the most fun that I have had in H2 in a while.

I'll openly admit that my driving the Warthog does not really help my team win matches. If anything, it hurts our chances. It's just so fun though that I find myself not caring that I don't have a high kill count. I'm usually quite focused on taking out the enemy when playing H2, but being able to casually drive around, doing jumps and barrel rolls all the while trying to avoid rockets and tank shells coming at me has been a nice change of pace. Even though I sometimes accidentally run-down my own teammates, it's still not enough to keep me from grabbing the next Warthog that appears and driving too close to a cliff. Here are a few highlights from my recent Warthog shenanigans:

  • While playing a match on Headlong, I noticed an enemy Warthog driving towards Kitty, so I shot a rocket at it. Although the rocket took out the warthog, its wreckage unfortunately spun right into Kitty, throwing her into the wall of a building.
  • During a different match on Headlong, I drove under a bridge just as Kitty was jumping off the bridge down onto the street. Again, she was thrown into a wall.
  • My personal favorite incident occured on Coagulation, when I somehow got myself caught between an enemy with a rocket launcher and a Scorpion that was not too friendly. I turned around and tried to escape but the Scorpion fired a round than hit the back of the Warthog, killing the gunner (do I really have to say who it was?) and sending the vehicle flying high into the air. It must have traveled a quarter of the way across the map before I jumped out (it was still flying, and blew up about a second after I bailed), and landed completely unharmed. I was then killed by a sniper.

If there is one thing in Halo 2 that I am really bad at, but make look really good, it's driving the Warthog. I still won't be caught dead in a Banshee though.
